The use of runes for talismans is well documented. If you would like to see some historical examples from Bergen, Norway, there is an extensive online database of finds from the Medieval period. Most are on wood.

Runic Talismans

In ancient times, the use of runes for magic was just as important as their use in divination. And while everyone has their own unique reasons for wanting magical assistance in their lives, some concerns such as love, success and protection are as universal today as they were centuries ago.

Each of these beautiful pendants is made from a different wood, chosen for it's unique magical energy. They are inscribed with combinations of runes designed to aid in various magical purposes. Each one comes with a leather thong, and a complete explanation of the meanings of the runes used.
